Position Overview:

We are seeking highly qualified adjunct faculty to provide online instruction for U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC) Naval Studies courses. Faculty will engage adult learners from across the Naval Services in a dynamic virtual learning environment while supporting student academic success, critical thinking, and professional development.

Ideal candidates will bring a combination of academic achievement, military or government experience, and demonstrated excellence in online teaching. USNCC places value on instructors who understand the culture, leadership, and operational environments of the Department of Defense and the Sea Services.

Key Responsibilities:

• Teach assigned Naval Studies courses in an asynchronous online environment using Blackboard or a comparable Learning Management System (LMS).
• Facilitate engaging online discussions and foster student participation.
• Evaluate student assignments, papers, projects, and assessments using established grading rubrics.
• Provide timely, substantive, and constructive feedback to students.
• Monitor student progress and identify at-risk learners.
• Maintain regular communication with students, course leads, and academic support personnel.
• Submit required reports, grade documentation, and end-of-course summaries.
• Participate in faculty onboarding, orientation activities, and professional development as required.
• Adhere to all USNCC policies, procedures, and academic standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Academically Qualified (AQ) Faculty/Instructor

Candidates must possess:

• A master's degree (required) or terminal degree (preferred) in a discipline relevant to the course being taught.
• A minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching discipline.
• Prior college-level teaching experience.
• Experience teaching in online learning environments.
• Proficiency with Blackboard or similar Learning Management Systems.

Professionally Qualified (PQ) Faculty/Instructor

Candidates must possess:

• A bachelor's degree or higher.
• Significant professional experience directly related to the subject matter.
• Demonstrated expertise through military service, government experience, leadership roles, applied scholarship, or other substantive professional accomplishments.
• Experience that uniquely qualifies them to teach the assigned content area.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior military service or civilian experience supporting the Department of Defense.
• Experience with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Department of the Navy.
• Experience teaching adult learners in higher education.
• Knowledge of adult learning theory and online instructional best practices.
• Strong student evaluations and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
• Academic publications, professional certifications, or participation in relevant professional organizations.

Technology Requirements

Faculty/Instructor must have:

• A personal computer capable of supporting online instruction.
• Reliable high-speed internet access.
• Professional email access.
• Ability to work effectively in Blackboard or comparable LMS platforms.

US Citizenship Required: Due to the requirements of the federal contract supporting this position, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify before the start of employment.

Naval Studies Courses

NAV  101 

• Military ethics, philosophy, leadership, law (post JD degree, such as, LLM in military law), U.S. history, and political science. 
•  Introductory courses in law of warfare, international law, military ethics, leadership, organizational behavior, law of the sea and freedom of navigation, and security studies. 

 NAV  102 

• U.S. History, military history, government, strategic studies, and public policy. 
• Introductory courses in U.S. history, military history, strategy, defense policy, and security studies. 

NAV  103 

•  U.S. national security studies, American government, political science, organizational design, naval engineering, and systems engineering. 
•  Courses in U.S. defense strategy/policy, introduction to U.S. politics and government, systems engineering, naval systems design, public policy, and public policy analysis. 

NAV 104 

• U.S. national security studies, American government and politics, comparative politics, public policy, public administration, and American history. 
•  Courses in U.S. politics and government, politics and public policy, U.S. history, U.S. defense policy and/or strategy, civics, and civic engagement. 

NAV  105 

• Political science, comparative politics, international relations, and U.S. security studies. 
• Introductory courses in World politics, global security studies, American foreign policy, and U.S. national security. 

General Education Courses

English 

• 18 graduate credit hours in English, composition, mass comm; Post secondary English teaching / post-secondary writing center experience 
• Introductory courses in English, academic or technical writing, and written communication. 

 Critical Thinking 

• Master's Degree; Preferred earned PhD Degree in either philosophy, rhetoric, communication, psychology, or general humanities. 
• Introductory courses in logic, critical thinking, psychology, philosophy, and rhetoric. 

Math 

• MS degree in Math, Statistics or related field from and accredited  institution with minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the subject.  
• Introductory college math courses such as finite math, intro to statistics, algebra, pre-calc, etc., in an asynchronous online format.  

Science 

• MS degree in an engineering or physical science field (physics, chemistry, geology, etc.) from an accredited institution with minimum 18 graduate credit hours in the subject field.  
• Introductory college-level natural science courses, such as: physics, chemistry, geology, oceanology, etc., in an online format.  

 Any exceptions to the above qualifications for faculty must be approved by the USNCC Contracting Officer's Representative (CO).
